Family, food, fun and Fireworks! The Intelligent Office hopes that all of you enjoyed the Independence Day Holiday celebration. The excitement of the holiday weekend and the desire to stay in bed this morning and “recoup” can make getting back to the program a bit of a drag.
Despite our “One More (and sometimes two more) Day(s)” Syndrome, the holiday has passed and our businesses require our attention. Instead of dreading coming into the office the next few days, try some of these suggestions for boosting your energy to increase your excitement about taking care of business!
Get Physical!
STRETCH. It’s been proven that stretching will increase your energy and recharge your brain in a matter of minutes. These basic exercises will also be a lot healthier for you than filling up on caffeinated energy drinks.

Sitting at your desk for hours? Try a Calf Stretch on your next bathroom break:
Stand with your feet together, then step back with one foot. Push into the heel and bend your other leg slightly.
Keep your back straight, your stomach tight, with feet facing forwards, and heels on the floor.
Imagine a straight line running from your back heel to your head.
Hold the position for 30 seconds. Feel the stretch in your calf.
Repeat the stretch with your other leg.
You can intensify the stretch by moving your rear foot slightly back. Push into the heel and hold for a few seconds.
You may also perform this stretch with your body one meter from a wall, and your hands on the wall. Keep your arms straight for support. Push your hips forward and bend your legs slightly till you feel the stretch in your calf.
Watch out
Keep your back straight and your stomach muscles taut.
Breathe gently. Do not hold your breath.

Sometimes stress will play a factor in your day to day activities. Take a moment to try a shoulder stretch to relieve that tension:
Stand in front of a rail or wall and grab the rail with your hands. Keep the knees slightly bend.
Bend forward without dropping your shoulders. Keep the back rounded and the neck extended throughout the stretch. Push your back towards the ceiling as if you are a cat.
Hold the stretch for 30 seconds.
WALK. We live and work in an age where everything we need is available to us at our fingertips. Though this option has made production faster and more efficient, it has also enabled us to sit for longer periods of time. The longer we remain stagnant, the less energy we have.
Take a walk, movement will increase your energy immediately and you will return from a stroll around the office building feeling more alive, awake, alert and excited about your day!
Beyond the physical exercises, there are activities that you can participate in that will significantly increase your energy in the workplace:
SMILE.

Often times we are all so focused on our busy schedules and important deadlines that we forget the power of exchanging pleasantries. A smile has been proven to improve your health, your stress level, and your attractiveness. Have you ever noticed how greeting a person who is smiling makes you smile? Share that positive energy to revitalize your colleagues! Remember, Smiles are Free!
SPEAK SUCCESS. Share success stories, empowering messages, and uplifting antidotes to inspire your colleagues and clients to achieve success. Sharing a positive message will increase the energy of your environment making your business more productive and thus, more successful.
PLAN A VACATION. You work hard. Planning for a vacation is not only rewarding in taking that vacation, but the reward you receive at the office daily when you know that the hard work you are putting in allows you to have the incentive of taking a well deserved trip to the Bahamas will keep you focused on the task at hand and your energy levels high!
Thank you,
